Exhibition:
Leaves of Enchantment, Bones of Inspiration -- The Dawn of Chinese studies in Canada

Time:
May 25,2010 - September 17, 2010

Place:
Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, 130 St. George Street, Toronto

Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library will set up a special exhibition in May to introduce the Chinese rare books collection of the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library.

The Mu Collection, a major and significant Chinese rare book collection in North America, contains about 2,300 titles and 40,000 volumes, spanning the period from the Song Dynasty (960-1279) to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It originally belonged to the personal library of a Chinese scholar, Mu Xuexun (1880-1929). In 1933, it was purchased by the Canadian missionary, Bishop William Charles White (1873-1960) and then shipped to Toronto in 1935.

The exhibition will highlight the finest part of the collection with a broad coverage of subject areas. The long and rich history of Chinese writing and book culture will be illustrated vividly with artifacts from the ROM on display at the same exhibition.

This exhibition is curated by Stephen Qiao, China Studies Librarian, and the accompanying catalog is prepared by Stephen Qiao and George Zhao of the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library.

"Colonial-Period Korea" database (trial subscription)

Dear Korean Studies materials users,

We would like to let you know that the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library will have a trial subscription to the “Colonial-Period Korea” from Feb. 1 to Mar. 1, 2010.

The “Colonial-Period Korea” database is a product of Brill. It contains a unique collection of rare documents relating to the Japanese occupation of Korea, from the late nineteenth century up to 1945, representing a highly significant period in Korean history, and vital for a true understanding of many reflexes in the Koreas today.

Drawn from the holdings of the C.V. Starr East Asian Library at Columbia University, New York, the collection includes more than 62,000 pages in Japanese language, 18,000 pages of Western (in most cases English) early impressions of Korea, and Korean texts (16,000 pages).

Access to the Colonial-Period Korea
From the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library homepage:
Path: East Asian Library Website -> Resources menu -> Korea Studies Resources -> Search -> e-references -> Colonial-Period Korea
(or http://link.library.utoronto.ca/eal/flash/menu.cfm?level=5&id=3)

We have only a one month trial subscription so we hope that you will make the most of it.

If you have any questions regarding the database, please don't hesitate to contact Hana Kim, Korea Studies Librarian, at hn.kim@utoronto.ca.
